The steadily increased specific power and torque output leads to improved driving performance of Diesel powered vehicles. In the context of the CO{sub}2 discussion, the downsized displacement is an option, which needs to be considered for future applications. In this paper, the different aspects of a downsizing concept will be discussed. Based on gas-exchange calculations with respect to compatibility to the targeted full load performance of 80 kW/1, a 2-stage boosting concept was chosen and the EGR-path and the combustion system were enhanced to meet this significant challenge. Finally the potential of the downsizing concept during the NEDC is assessed.
