A model-based turbocharger protection function is proposed and discussed. Turbo-charger speed estimation is required to prevent turbocharger over speeding. A model of the compressor behaviour is calculated from the measured data to identify a compressor map and a detailed explanation starting from the modelling up to the calibration is provided. Turbocharger speed limitation is an example of the AVL Smart Calibration concept (1). This paper describes a novel approach to vehicle optimization of turbocharger speed limitation. It shows that improved processes for function development and calibration can be developed based on the know-how of the engine, combustion and electronics in conjunction with improved and adjusted tools.
