In 2005 WEL Networks realised that its existing communications infrastructure was becoming overloaded and could not sustainably manage the growth in substations and the industry trend to IP capable devices. WEL Networks engaged with Tesla Consultants to benchmark the existing serial communications network, look at technology options and strategically plan for the future communications network requirements. The benchmarking of the WEL Networks communications system in 2005 consisted of a discovery phase which assembled background information gathered about the existing equipment and formed the start point for the strategic options and planning phases. The document brought together all of the operational knowledge and the collective thinking of WEL Networks, contractors and consultants in a single document that included the outline of the operational requirements and the business drivers for change.
