Major consumer trends impacting packaging include concern for health and wellness, environmental sensitivity, improved product experience, and convenience. These trends drive brand owners and retailers to incorporate into their packages benefits reflecting product freshness, shelf impact, convenience, packaging efficiency, and environmental awareness to create an enhanced experience for the consumer. This paper discusses the development of packages with barrier optimized for the product, and shows how product freshness and environmental impact are linked by product life cycle analysis.
