TNPP - Update on Global Risk Assessments

Tris (nonylphenyl phosphite) or TNPP (CAS# 26523-78-4) is a well-known liquid phosphite that functions as a low cost, process stabilizer with very good hydrolytic stability. TNPP is widely used in various polymers including polyolefins, polystyrene and rubber. TNPP is used in plastics such as bathroom curtains, tires, shoe soles and food packaging. The substance has broad clearance and global approvals for use in food contact materials. TNPP has been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration and the European Food Agency as well as food agencies across the globe. TNPP is currently the subject of an extensive review by the European Union (EU) as part of its Existing Substance Regulation. This paper will review the preliminary findings from the EU Assessment of TNPP as well as address misconceptions about TNPP and nonylphenol (NP).
