Feasibility study for the development of noise-reduced meat-processing machinery

The German Fleischerei-Berufsgenossenschaft initiated the research project "ELF - Entwicklung larmarmer Fleischverarbeitungsmaschinen" ("Development of noise-reduced meatprocessing machinery"), which is performed by the Fraunhofer Institute LBF and in which nine European machine manufacturers participate. The potential of noise reduction measures was estimated by means of air-borne and structure-borne sound measurements. In the course of this feasibility study the noise and the vibrations emitted by a so-called cutter were analyzed. Preliminary measurements were prepared and performed in the LBF lab while the cutter was filled with water. After that measurements under real conditions were performed at a butcher's shop while the cutter was filled with ground meat and crushed ice. From these measurements various noise reduction approaches were deduced and assessed.
