A Project-Driven Operating Systems Class: A Case Study

Many undergraduate operating systems classes focus more on theoretical concepts than on constructing an actual working operating system. Most classes that do have such an integrated project require a lot of background from the students. In [1] Black described a project which leads to a full operating system while requiring little student background. In this paper we discuss our experiences teaching a semester-long undergraduate operating systems class centered around such a "bare metal" operating systems project.
