Dr. Gilbreth and Her Husband: Lillian’s (and Frank’s) Purdue Legacy

Dr. Lillian Gilbreth is generally recognized as one of the instrumental founders of the fields of Industrial Engineering and Scientific Management, and their applications across a wide range of workplace and home settings. She is remembered as the first female member of the National Academy of Engineering and included on a “Great Americans” US postage stamp. The Gilbreth Collection at Purdue University traces her significant influences on industry, home life, and even household architectural design from the 1910s through the 1960s. This paper provides a brief overview of Dr. Gilbreth’s contributions and influences on Purdue and the Industrial Engineering profession.
