A systematic study of the effects of alcohols of different chain length in the synthesis of iron oxide nano-rods was conducted because it was evident from previous work done that it plays a vital role in the formation of rods in addition to that of surfactant. It was found that rod-like particles were obtained and that the length of the particles was related to the chain length. Use of alcohols without CH{sub}2 chains resulted in spherical particles.
