A new class of siloxane-based surfactants that display superspreading behavior in combination with enhanced pH stability and coatings utility has been demonstrated. Specifically, CoatOSil* 1220 and CoatOSil* 1221 silicone surfactants remain stable in aqueous solutions at pH 6-11 and 6-8 respectively, while traditional TSAs display similar stability only over the limited pH range of 6.5 to 7.5. Additionally, these new surfactants are very effective wetting agents for waterborne coatings and have shown, in our experiments, particular utility in uniformly coating difficult-to-wet surfaces.
