1995 FAO Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries: some basic issues and considerations

The presentation commenced by noting that the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) had been a landmark meeting that focused international attention on people and their environment. UNCED adopted Agenda 21 that encouraged international re-assessment and re-orientation of thinking on how the environment and natural resources should be managed and utilize. Chapter 17 addressed fisheries. It profoundly affected thinking about the need for the development of the Code of Conduct.
