Pacific Gas and Electric manages 18,000 miles of transmission lines in California within fivegeneral bioregions that extend from the coastal areas to the Sierra Nevada/Cascades. The de-velopment of an integrated resource management (IRM) strategy through the use of integratedvegetation management (IVM) techniques, have reduced environmental and social conflicts. Veg-etation managers are actively promoting the benefits of IRM to ecological, cultural, and economicresources to obtain approvals for their vegetation management of transmission rights-of-way.Specific techniques are presented that have been developed to allow utilities to use integratedvegetation management methods to provide safe and reliable energy while maintaining posi-tive property owner relationships. Using IVM to accomplish IRM successfully integrates a widerange of environmental issues as well property owner concerns. A matrix of IVM techniques isdescribed to show how desired vegetation types can be established and maintained.
