The experience gained in measuring radon in homes in Ireland over the past 20 years isused to identify four key strategic decisions that need to be made in designing and implementing asuccessful program. These are (1) the need to address both individual and collective dose; (2) thetype of radon mapping that needs to be undertaken; (3) the criteria to be considered in setting areference level; and (4) a policy of information and advice versus enforcement. Each of theseissues is discussed from a policy viewpoint and the radon situation in Ireland is used to support thearguments made.
