Radon in Irish Show Caves – PersonalMonitoring Data From 2001-2006

The European Directive 96/29/EURATOM and its transposition into national legislationdemands the application of radiation protection measures if the presence of radon and radon decayproducts leads to significant increase in exposures of workers. Irish legislation further demandsthat laboratories carrying out radon measurements operate a high level quality assuranceprogramme. As a result of a reconnaissance survey regular measurements of show cave guideshave been made in order to assess exposure to radon in such workplaces and to ascertain that thelimits set for radon are not exceeded. In 2000, an action level of 400 Bqm~(-3), was established.Doses in the range 0.3-12.0 mSv have been estimated for workers for the period 2001-2006.
