The Fifth-Generation NCAR/Penn State Mesoscale Model is the latest in a series that developed from a mesoscale mode used by Penn State early in the 80's which has been widely used in meteorology, environment, ocean, and other subject areas. Nowadays, the typhoon wind field analysis in civil engineering still use simple analytic formulas or two-dimensional numerical simulation which can't meet the actual engineering needs. The MM5 Modeling System which considers microphysics fully can be used for typhoon simulation, which have great significance on major projects (long-span bridges, and spatial structures, etc). Level and spatial resolution, PBL schemes, and cumulus parameterizations schemes were adjusted reasonably in order to study typhoon risk assessment in civil engineering. Finally, the results of the application of MM5 on a specified typhoon were compared with Shapiro wind-field model.
