Breast cancer is one of the most important malignant forms of cancer and a great threatto life for women. In the present study, the spectral characteristics of human breast tissues innormal and cancerous state have been investigated by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR)absorption spectroscopy in the spectral region from 4000 to 400 cm~(-1).Several spectral differenceswere detected in the frequency regions N-H stretching, C-H vibrations, amide bands and 900-1300 cm~(-1).The ratio of intensities the bands ofA_(3300)/A_(3015) & 1650)/1550), 2924)/2853), 1080)/A_(1236),A_(1204)/A_(1650),1055)/1467)andA_(1045)/provide conformational changes of protein, lipids, nucleicacids, collagen, carbohydrates and glycogen respectively in the human breast tissues. There areobvious differences in the spectral features between normal and cancerous tissues because ofchanges in molecular compositions and structures that accompany the transformation from anormal to a cancerous state. The differences suggest that the spectral information are useful forthe diagnosis of breast cancer and may serve as a basis for conformational changes in tissuecomponents during carcinogenesis.
