Establishment of a metrology based measurement system requires the solid foundation of traceability of measurements to available, appropriate certified reference materials (CRM). From introduction in the early 1970s of the first "Biological" RM, a much wider variety of food related CRM have become available. Since 1983 these activities have been recognized in a series of International Symposia on Biological and Environmental Reference Materials. These food matrix RM's have been utilized to evaluate present systems for food composition measurements. From the perspective of being involved in this measurement area over these 30 plus years, it is useful to briefly look at this past growth, assess where we are at the present and look at future trends for reference material activities in the area of food and nutrition measurements.
