SULPHATE AND MINING - AN APPRAISAL

Sulphate discharge is an important issue for the mining industry. Interest in effective low cost measures to reduce sulphate concentration in water from mine sites is increasingly evident. Reasons for control measures are discussed and recent technical developments summarized. Multiple sources of sulphate in water supplies and their ecological, municipal, industrial and agricultural implications are examined. A sulphur balance for a hypothetical mining operation and a major fresh water system will assist in focusing on source control and cost effectiveness in the application of novel approaches to sulphate control.
