Sulphate discharge is an important issue for the mining industry. Interest in effective low costmeasures to reduce sulphate concentration in water from mine sites is increasingly evident. Reasons forcontrol measures are discussed and recent technical developments summarized. Multiple sources ofsulphate in water supplies and their ecological, municipal, industrial and agricultural implications areexamined. A sulphur balance for a hypothetical mining operation and a major fresh water system will assistin focusing on source control and cost effectiveness in the application of novel approaches to sulphatecontrol.
