There are biological routes available today to produce traditional petrochemical based polymers from renewable resources. As the economics become more competitive (improvements in technologies, increased cost of oil, natural gas, and coal, potential CO_2 taxes, etc), more of these renewable options will be implemented worldwide. These developments will cause the lines to be blurred between “traditional polymers" and the "renewable polymers" available today.
