Over the last 30 years the IC industry has continued to shrink the minimum featuresize on an IC, effectively doubling IC capacity every 18-24 months. This trend iscommonly referred to as "Moore's Law" after Gordon Moore,' the man whopredicted this phenomenon in 1965.
