Just over a decade ago a new preservative system was introduced into North America based on a dispersion of small particles of basic copper carbonate (BCC) formulated with a co-biocide. At the time, little of the chemistry of the system was understoodSince then a considerable body of knowledge has been generated as well as chemical techniques to enable the solubilized copper and the basic copper particles to each be quantified (Xue, et al., 2010; 2011 and 2012a). The total copper can be measured using x-ray fluorescent (XRF) spectroscopy while the reacted copper can be quantified using electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy (Xue, et al., 2011 and 2013a).
