A PRODUCT ENVIRONMENTAL COMPLIANCE CASE STUDY-ESTABLISHING A RoHS FULL DISCLOSURE AUDIT TRAIL FOR AN ELECTRONICS MANUFACTURING SERVICES COMPANY

In regard to collecting, managing, and reporting material declaration compliance information, this is a case study of The GoodBye Chain Group's work with a large Electronics Manufacturing Services Company (EMS). EMS was faced with demands from one of its largest customers to provide full disclosure material declaration information by July 1, 2006. EMS started working on RoHS compliance in 2004. EMS supports and utilizes the IPC-1752 Material Declaration Management Standard and the material declaration class definitions contained in the standard (see Table 1). In March 2006, one of its largest customers mandated that EMS provide RoHS full disclosure compliance data for its products by July 1, 2006. EMS had provided yes/no declarations to this customer earlier utilizing the IPC 1752 Class 1 PDF declaration form. However, the yes/no information that had been provided was not satisfactory to the customer. This customer had recently conducted an audit of the material declaration information that it had received from all of its suppliers and determined that more than 50% of the yes/no declaration information that it had received was incorrect. The result of this audit, in tandem with the new demand for full disclosure compliance data, was the catalyst for EMS to decide that it needed to implement a full disclosure declaration solution as soon as possible.
