Sampling POPs in Oceanic Remote Locations:Dealing with Ship-Based Contamination.

Time integrated air and sea water samples were collected on board the RV Polarstern during a scientific cruise from Germany to the Arctic Ocean and from Germany to Cape Town.Great care was taken to minimize and test for ship contamination during air and water sampling by the use of field,travel and laboratory blanks.In addition,passive air samplers(PUF disks)were deployed at different ship locations on the ship,indoors and on the deck,to determine whether it was a potential source of contamination for POPs.Results show that the RV Polarstern is a clean ship with respect to PCBs.However,it is a potential source of the polybrominated diphenyl ethers(PBDEs),a class of flame retardants.
