The Envisat MERIS Terrestrial Chlorophyll index (MTCI) was developed to overcome the limitations of using red-edge approaches for estimating the chlorophyll content of vegetation. There is a pressing need to 'validate' the MTCI over a wide range of environmental conditions. This paper reports on the ongoing validation of the MTCI and presents methods to assess the relationship between MTCI and chlorophyll content at two contrasting sites. At both sites, the observed linear relationship between MTCI and chlorophyll content suggests that the MTCI is a valuable tool for estimating chlorophyll content across a range of vegetation cover types and LAIs (Leaf Area Index).
