The use of remote sensing for the mapping and monitoring of shallow marine habitats has advantages over in-situ field survey techniques. Due to the nature of these areas, they are often difficult and potentially hazardous to access. In addition, ground surveys often require specialised scuba diver or boat based survey techniques. Nevertheless, the UK has an obligation to monitor certain sites around its extensive coastline due to various International environmental designations.
