It is our great pleasure to welcome you to the 9th ACM SIG Multimedia International Workshop on Multimedia Information Retrieval -- MIR'07. Like in the past years, this workshop is held in conjunction with the ACM Multimedia Conference. Continuing the great tradition of MIR, the purpose of this year's workshop is to bring together researchers, developers, and practitioners from academia and industry to discuss important challenges, latest advances, and future possibilities in multimedia retrieval. >The MIR 2007 received 45 completed submissions for peer-reviewed tracks. The authors of these submissions are from Australia, China (mainland, Hong Kong, and Taiwan), Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Japan, Korea, Singapore, Switzerland, Turkey, The Netherlands, United Kingdom, and USA. The Program Committee selected 10 (22%) contributions to include in the program as regular papers and an additional 15 as poster papers. There are also two invited special sessions on "Semantic Indexing of Consumer and Web Videos" and "Personalized Multimedia Information Retrieval". Shih-Fu Chang, Dan Ellis, Alex Loui, Jiebo Luo, Nicu Sebe, and Qi Tian organized these sessions. >We are very delighted to have two outstanding keynote speakers. Michael Lesk of Rutgers University, an elected member of the US National Academy of Engineering, and Arnold Smeulder of University of Amsterdam, a highly cited researcher in our field, will provide their visions. The panel this year, moderated by Jia Li, will focus on new challenges in multimedia research for the increasingly connected and fast growing digital society. The panelists include Shih-fu Chang, Michael Lesk, Rainer Lienhart, Jiebo Luo, and Arnold Smeulders.
