Over the past hundred years, government schools in Brunei Darussalam have practiced traditionaltypes of student assessments, such as: memorization, tests, examinations and homework. In January2008, the Ministry of Education implemented in stages a new system of education, “Sistem PendidikanNegara Abad ke21” (National System of Education towards the 21st Century), for year 7 and 8 run ingovernment secondary schools. This new system demands for the shifting from traditional types ofstudent assessments towards School-Based Assessment. This paper will focus particularly on theunderstanding and implementation of Student Self-Assessment as part of a School-BasedAssessment approach among secondary school teachers in years 7 and 8 in the teaching of thesubject of Islamic Revealed Knowledge. Research including a questionnaire and interview wasconducted in 10 secondary schools in the Brunei Muara District. The questionnaire instrument wasgiven to a sample of 20 teachers investigated their understanding, implementation and challenge ofapplying Student Self-Assessment, whilst the interview was conducted with five teachers exploredtheir perceptions and suggestions regarding the implementation of this system in schools. Theresearch findings show that from a total of 20 respondents, all teachers understand what Student Self-Assessment is but one respondent does not know how to apply this approach in teaching. This paperwill discuss research findings in more detail, which include the implementation, challenges andperceptions of this system, as well as suggestions for how it can be improved.
