PODCASTING IN EDUCATION: A PEDAGOGICAL, MARKETING, AND PROJECT MANAGEMENT PERSPECTIVE

The process of instruction to promote lifelong learning is a complicated one at the best of times. A group of eager students is a challenging composite of learning styles and needs. Nonetheless, an abundance of new media gives promise of making new possibilities accessible through improved interaction between instructor and student. The focus of my presentation emphasizes instructional uses of podcasts in and outside the classroom. The medium not only facilitates the delivery of learning but also enhances the learning process for the students. In addition, my presentation outlines project management guidelines useful when launching a podcasting initiative and how such an initiative can be marketed for different audiences. Based on several projects beginning fall 2005, I would like to share my experience and thoughts with colleagues who have a common concern for expanding educational, cultural, and marketing opportunities for all people, for example, a showcase of projects that inform on ways that support a student-centered approach to instruction. As a creative communication tool, podcasts enable faculty one more way to interact with their students. Among the possibilities, it allows faculty to present scenarios and questions to their students, put forward points to ponder, and help students come to class prepared to articulate the thoughts stimulated in the podcast. Moreover, it allows an educational institution to supplement its marketing initiatives via the podcasting medium, initiatives which could relate to recruitment, fund raising, etc. To use new media effectively, instructors need a vision for the possibilities and opportunities to apply these tools in their curriculum. The intent of this presentation is to specify the elements, available by using new media in education, that can advance the attainment of the desired educational outcomes.
