Catalytic Effect of Group IV Transition Metals on Oxidative Stability of Biodiesel

Biodiesel is a major source of liquid biofuels. Although the consumption of biodiesel has experience strong growth in recent years, fuel quality problems have been reported. Since biodiesel is used in compression ignition engines, fuel injector fouling is especially problematic. Thus, the formation of high molecular weight species as a result of biodiesel oxidation is a significant problem. Factors that increase the rate of oxidation include light, heat and metals. The effect of group IV transition metal ion catalysis of biodiesel oxidation is investigated here.
