Catalytic system for polyester mfr. for fibres, films and containers - comprises use of geranium or antimony derivs. and transition metal cpds. and metal content derived from catalytic system
A catalytic system for polymerisation of bis-(2-hydroxyethyl) terephthalate or its homologous oligomers characterised by including: a cpd. of formula (I) Zx-A(O)m-Ry (I) or its anhydride, Z = OH, OM, OR', NR"2, while M is a simple or complex I-IV valent metallic ion or an organic ion; A = P, S, B, Si, As, or C, in this case R=alkyl perfluorate gp.; R, R' & R" are 1-20C radicals; m = 0,1,2; y = 1 or more; x = 0 or more; an Sb or Ge deriv. present in such a quantity that the residual metal in the final polymer is 5-130 ppm.; and a Ti deriv. present in such a quantity that the residual metal in the final polymer is 0-20 ppm.; while the metal content from the catalyst system in the final polymer being below 130 ppm. Also claimed is poly(ethylene terephthalate) produced by the catalyst and the use of the polyester.
