TERNARY PHASE EQUILIBRIA OF SCLAREOL-ETHYL LACTATE-CO2 MIXTURES FOR GAS ANTI-SOLVENT PRECIPITATION APPLICATIONS IN THE EXTRACTION AND ISOLATION OF NUTRACEUTICALS

This paper focuses on the extraction of sclareol from the flowers and leaves of Salvia Sclarea Lamiaceae, or clary sage. Sclareol is highly water-insoluble, and is used as a fragrance in cosmetics and as a synthon for preparation of Ambra odorants in perfumery (Packer et al., 2001). In addition, it is characterized as an antioxidant and biologically active molecule due to its cytotoxic and cytostatic effects against human leukemia cell lines (Hatziantoniou et al., 2006; Dimas et al., 1999; Gulcin et al., 2004). It was found to induce cell cycle arrest and apoptosis. Moreover, it can be used to promote a calming effect to the nervous system and as a relief of muscle spasms and menopausal symptoms.
