About 85% of the world’s energy needs are supplied by fossil fuels, and combustion has been the most used process for fossil energy utilization, with coal the principal fossil fuel employed. Coal combustion generates large amount of pollutants: SO2, which contributes to acid rain formation; CO2, a major contributor to greenhouse gases; NOx (NO and NO2) that induce photochemical smog and acid rain, and N2O which causes ozone layer depletion.
