Reduction of Coercivity in Electroplated Permalloy Thin Films Utilizing a Brightening Agent

We have investigated the fabrication process and magnetic properties of thin Ni-Fe Permalloy films. We have added 0.2-1.0μmol/L of an organic additive in the plating electrolyte. Comparing with the films prepared with inorganic electrolyte only, those plated with the additive produced smoother surface and smaller grains. The reduction of surface roughness and grain size resulted in lower coercivity, which is required for quality soft magnets.
