Knowledge Preservation

The primary mission of the Kansas City Plant (KCP) and Kirtland Operations (KO) is to produce non-nuclear components for the U. S. nuclear weapons stockpile. As facility operators, Honeywell Federal Manufacturing & Technologies (FM&T) has knowledge that is unique within the Nuclear Weapons Complex (NWC) to maintain the nuclear weapons stockpile and recognize knowledge as one of its greatest assets. As a result, preserving knowledge is essential to our ability to maintain the weapons stockpile. FM&T has developed a method of capturing knowledge and making it accessible to others known as Knowledge Preservation through Process Mapping. Knowledge preservation captures critical processes and brings them together with subject matter expert notes, work instructions and process maps. The result is an organized display of critical process information, presented in the context of a manufacturing environment. The knowledge preservation team works with operators, engineers and scientists to capture process knowledge, procedures and tacit knowledge. Expected benefits of knowledge preservation include; ability to reproduce a process after the Subject Matter Experts are retired and gone; reduced training time and improved learning curves for manufacturing and support personnel.
