PET-CT for navigation in cases of chronic osteitis? An experimental investigation

Introduction: Is it possible, by means of (18)F Fluorodesoxyglucose-Posi-tronen-Emissions-Tomographie-Computertomographie (FDG-PET-CT) data created in line with the diagnostics of chronic osteitis, to undertake a navigation for the treatment of the focus of osteitis? Materials and Methods: Within the scope of an experimental examination, the focus of osteitis at an artificial bone phantom has been simulated. The surface of the artificial bone was coated with metalliferous lacquer for improvement of the contrast. A cavity of 3,2 mm was drilled in the cortical bone. Using FDG, a PET-CT dataset at the primed artificial bone model has been created. For matching the position of the artificial FDG-focus and the virtual displayed position a cortical screw was placed close to the FDG-focus in the cortical bone. The PET CT dataset has been saved on a conventional CD and has been imported into a conventional optical navigation system. Two X-Ray shots in different positions were taken from the region of interest. With the existing software of the navigation system, the referencing of the PET-CT datasets under laboratory conditions has been conducted. The referencing of the dataset was achieved with CT-fluoro-matching. Finally, the accuracy of the image of the navigated instrument on the navigation display has been compared with the optical controlled actual placement of the simulated position of the focus of osteitis. The screenshots were stored at CD and printed for further evaluation.
