Correction of Immune Disorders in Surgical Patients: Issue of the Day in Modern Surgery

Prevention and treatment of purulent septic complications has been an actual problem in surgery for years. Immune system is the key effector and regulatory part of genetic homogeneity maintenance while immune disorders are considered crucial in pathogenesis of surgical infection. Due to the main pathology, immunodeficiency diagnosed in surgical patients before the operation is aggravated by the operation and many pharmacological drugs that affect the immune status, i.e., phagocytosis, humoral and cellular immunity. Today, clinical immunology is aimed to assess the functional status of immune system as well as to define indications to adequate and specific immunotherapy based on clinical immunological investigations results. Together with routine approaches to treatment of purulent septic complications, i.e., antibacterial and substitute immunotherapy, immunocorrecting therapy provides the correction of secondary immunodeficiency in surgical patients thus being a prospective method to boost immune protection.
