Despite the paucity of studies, the empirical literature is definitive that ending IVF treatment involves a long, complex and difficult emotional process for the patient. How well or poorly a couple reacts to the news that IVF will not result in their desired genetic child depends on different social, demographic, relational and psychological factors. In general, a patient-centered, emotionally-focused approach to the physician-patient consult is the optimal format for discussing ending IVF treatment.
