The dynamic behaviour of generating stations and their distribution in an electrical power system could have a significant impact on transmission system performance. The introduction of new generation technologies including renewable, clean coal and new nuclear stations in the GB transmission system requires careful considerations if the standards of security and quality of electricity supply are to be maintained. From the System Operator's perspective, it will be beneficial to share the operation experience with the generating plant developers and suppliers to ensure the system needs are well understood at an early stage of the development. The presentation gives an overview on the expected changes of generation mix and focuses on the key performance aspects which could be critical to future system operation. These include frequency operating range, voltage and frequency control issues, fault ride through considerations and embedded generation protection challenges. The information allows the developers to correctly specify and suppliers design appropriate generating stations to secure future sustainable and reliable system operation. Failing this could jeopardise the future successful integration of the expected large volume of new types of generation to the system.
