High efficiency and fast shift response: The next generation of the GM 6-speed global front wheel drive automatic transmission

The first generation of GM's global front wheel drive 6-speed automatic transmission (GF6) in being sold in more than one hundred different vehicle applications globally [1]. The annual production volume will reach close to 2 Million in 2011. This tremendous success has encouraged the global development team to design a second generation with further refinements. This new transmission generation will be introduced in even more global applications starting in summer of 2011. Main features of this evolvement are faster shift times, better shift response, and reduced vehicle CO_2 emissions. While maintaining the original concept and power-flow, the transmission hardware and software are optimized in several areas. Compared with the first generation of this transmission, the internal friction is reduced, and an optimized controls strategy is applied. Additional features are enhanced drivability, new software functions, and improved NVH behavior.
