To meet the challenging emissions targets planned for the future, OEMs are looking for efficiency improvements wherever they can be found. This results in the use of different materials; modified or new component design geometries or new component configurations. At the same time this creates new challenges for lubricants which must function with these materials and component environments and also deliver efficiency benefits. To ensure an optimised system within feasible timeframes, co-engineering of hardware and fluid offers a practical solution. This paper discusses the advantages of co-engineering and some of the keys to make this successful. It also covers some axle co-engineering examples and the level of efficiency that can be achieved from fluids.
