Inventory and scenario work provides a firm basis from which to develop a sustainability strategy; Technically, even achieving ACARE-like targets does not make for sustainable1 "business-as-usual" aviation - but it is a good start; Beyond 2020, technical 'revolution' instead of 'evolution' will be required - but it currently looks like EIS could well be beyond 2050; Socially, even a massive societal change like the 'Down-to-Earth' scenario still results in CO_2 emission levels from aviation at current levels.
