Comparison of Compression Test Methods for Pultruded Composites

A number of different compression test methods are available to determine the compressive mechanical properties of composite materials. Added to the problem of selecting the proper test method is the additional difficulty of obtaining a valid compression test of pultruded composites due to the presence of uniaxial reinforcement sometimes combined with different types of transverse reinforcements. This paper discusses the compressive test results and failure modes obtained from typical commercial pultruded materials such as ladder rail, sheet piling, and all unidirectional product using various compression test methods including ASTM D695, SACMA SRM 1R, and ASTM D6641 (CLC). The paper provides data showing which methods can be used to obtain valid results for different types of pultruded composites and discusses the pros and cons of the different methods.
