Shipboard demonstration of chlorine dioxide on a Swedish flagged Ro/Ro - Containership and a US flagged ITB Bulker

Many people, organizations and governments around the world are pursuing safe and effective ballast water treatment to control aquatic invasive species. One of the most significant challenges for ballast water treatment technologies is scalability - the ability to be scaled up to the needs of operating vessels. A great number of technologies have been proven effective at the theoretical stage, at the laboratory stage and even at the mesocosm stage. However, taking that same technology and providing a working framework for a shipboard operation has been proved overwhelming for many. This paper will discuss the installation and operation of one promising technology on two different commercial vessels. In addition, the most recent test results from an independent University will be provided.
