Potential nature conservation and landscape impacts of marine renewable energy developments in Welsh territorial waters

The drive for renewable energy has moved considerably up the UK Government's agenda in recent years, in response to the implications of climate change. This paper presents information on the available marine renewable technologies and the potential deployment locations available within Welsh Territorial Waters has been undertaken. The technologies considered include those that harness energy from wave, tidal and offshore wind resources. Furthermore, consideration of the sensitivity of the seascape and marine and coastal species and habitats to the potential environmental impact of deploying and installing these devices at these locations has been given, to help better current understanding and responses to the impacts of climate change by the Countryside Council for Wales. This paper summarises a report commissioned by CCW and reflects the views of the authors. It is not a statement of CCW policy.
