We present the second-order system of ordinary differential equations that governs adiabatic dipolar oscillations of spherically symmetric stars. This system fully takes the variation in the gravitational field into account. Based on this system, it is possible to establish a scheme to classify the adiabatic dipolar modes. We discuss a few topics concerning these results, including examination of other schemes for the mode classification and the problem of the dynamical stability.
