Metering to the Extremes: How Rural Alaska is deploying a robust AMR system using adaptable smart metering technology

Alaska Village Electric Cooperative, Inc. covers the largest area of any electric cooperative in the world. At AVEC, our service area covers much of rural Alaska and is not accessible during many months of the year. AVEC's 51 member villages span from as far north as Kivalina, to as far south as Old Harbor on Kodiak Island, and as far west as Gambell on St. Lawrence Island (within sight of Siberia), to as far east as Minto, located approximately 80 miles west of Fairbanks. The total population served by AVEC is approximately 20,000 people. The following figure shows the expanse of AVEC's service area.
