This paper outlines the design, development, and application of a flexible haptic application programming library and interface (API). The API uses a multithread architecture and a flexible interface to ease the control of haptic devices and the rendering of haptic related effects. A detailed description of the library architecture is provided presenting the flexibility of its API. This communication API that is built on top of the TCP/IP interface enables the graphics station application to communicate with the haptic library through a high level communication protocol. The flexibility of the haptic API is presented with the application of the interface in the medical planning procedure of total hip arthroplasty. The surgical access haptic renderer specific to this application is presented to demonstrate the ease of integration of the haptic application programming interface.
