This paper presents a multi-modal human-scale virtual environment that offers possible application in a wide variety of fields and is particularly suited for product design. Users interact with virtual objects using a string-based haptic interface that provides haptic sensation to both hands in a large workspace and is used to display various aspects of force feedback associated mainly with contact, weight, and inertia of objects. Visual, tactile and auditory displays provide users with sensory feedback and improve sensorial immersion. Stereoscopic images are displayed on a retro-projected screen and viewed using polarized glasses. To illustrate the suitability of the system for large-scale product design, a first industrial application was developed. The goal of this application is to validate the design of a car prototype.
