Hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene resins are typically immiscible with polyester polyols. As a result, the preparation of thermoplastic polyurethanes based on both types of polyol required the sequential reaction of each polyol with the 4,4'-methylenebis(phenyl isocyanate) (4,4'-MDI) component. The properties of the resulting thermoplastic polyurethanes were not influenced by the addition sequence of each polyol, but strongly dependent on the chain extender and the chemical composition of the polyester polyol. This dual polyol usage is designed to provide TPUs with enhanced mechanical properties compared to polybutadiene-based thermoplastic elastomers and improved bydrolytic resistance versus polyester-based TPUs.
